Of course the vertices need to be moved in the direction of their normal
vectors. For non-smooth triangles those normal vectors will need to be
calculated. This causes some problems (mainly: which algorithm to use?
How about allowing the user specify some related parameters? How about
adding a smooth-the-mesh feature? And so on...)
